Aptera Motors is perhaps as known for their community-led funding strategy as the solar electric vehicle they’ve been developing. They’re a prime example of mobilizing community in service of purpose that is the signature of a Purpose Round.

Mission

Aptera launched a Regulation A offering, raising over $100 million from more than 17,000 investors 1. This massive success highlighted the compelling nature of their mission and the power of turning supporters into stakeholders.

Mission

Instead of relying on accredited investors or venture capitalists alone, Aptera democratized the investment process through their “Accelerator Program,” which allowed anyone — accredited or non-accredited investors — to become a shareholder. They strategically incentivized larger investments by offering perks such as early vehicle reservations, branded merchandise and exclusive experiences 2.
“The concept of owning one of the first solar-powered vehicles immediately drew me in,” said Len Nowak, one of Aptera’s Accelerator program participants. “The Accelerator program was unexpected, and I wanted to dig deeper to provide a better chance to realize this unique vehicle and launch this groundbreaking company.” 3
Aptera also maintained an Accelerator Program leaderboard, creating a gamified investment experience, fostering transparency, and encouraging healthy competition among investors. The strategy resonated with their community, leading to more than $33M raised 3 but also strengthening the bond between the company and its supporters.
Prior to the success of the Accelerator Program, Aptera raised funds through platforms like WeFunder 4, where they surpassed their funding goals 5. This allowed smaller investors to get involved early on, establishing a foundational and accessible community of supporters.
Across all phases of their Purpose Round, Aptera actively engaged with their community of supporters, viewing them as partners in the journey rather than just funders. This “solar mobility movement” now includes over 46,000 reservation holders and more than $100M raised 6, a true community of customers and advocates brought together around shared purpose.
